Margin Works

You bought the software. Nobody used it.

That is the normal outcome, and it is almost never about features. Systems die when they need a guy in the field to stop and type. We build so the information updates itself.

The problem

Most shops run on a whiteboard and three group chats

Job status lives in a few different places and they do not agree with each other. Everyone works around it, because the workaround is faster than the fix. It holds together until a job quietly stalls and nobody notices until the product shows up.

Then someone sells you a platform with a six-figure price tag and a year of implementation. That is usually the wrong size of answer.

Method

How we work

  1. 01

    Map it before building anything

We walk every stage a job passes through — sale, measure, order, permit, delivery, install, final payment — and write down where it actually lives, who hands it to whom, and where it stalls. You keep that map no matter what happens next.

  2. 02

Then decide what the answer is

Sometimes it is software. Sometimes it is a change to how the office works. Sometimes it is a tool you can buy for forty dollars a month. Some of our engagements end with us telling you not to build anything — that recommendation costs us the build and it is still the right call.

  3. 03

Build it so it survives contact with the crew

If a system depends on people in the field stopping to update records, it will fail — that is not a discipline problem, it is a design problem. We derive job status from things that already happen: a payment posting, a permit approval landing in email, a delivery confirmation. Nobody has to remember anything.

A job that sits for weeks is your cash sitting with it. An office typing the same job into three places is payroll you are spending twice. A permit correction nobody told the customer about becomes a complaint, then a callback. And paid leads cost real money when the county is already publishing better ones.

None of that shows up as a line item. All of it comes out of your margin. That is the whole job.

Case

Public records already know where your next job is

Florida law puts buildings on a mandatory recertification clock. Permits, licensing, and county registries are all public. Most contractors never touch any of it, because it arrives as hundreds of thousands of unusable rows.

Buildings ranked by how likely each one is to need the client's product — resolved out of a county extract of nearly half a million records, for a South Florida specialty contractor. Delivered as a working spreadsheet before a line of software was written.

An hour at your shop. We follow one job from the day it sold to the day it got paid, and write down every place it touched. You will see the gaps yourself before we say a word about them.
